Okay that’s unfair… none of the chips we’re talking about were meant to beat Nvidia’s GPUs but rather to compliment them. Nvidia’s Blackwell is a monster of a GPU that nobody has an answer to just yet.
But in about the space of a week…
- Meta’s next gen MTIA has come out and is in use in Meta’s datacenters.
- Intel’s Gaudi 3 has been released.
- Google’s TPU v5p came out last week. TPU v5p is Google’s most powerful cloud TPU for training AI models.
Three different companies, three different takes on AI processors. But all meant to do the same thing, improve performance. And that’ll be the theme from here on out. Better energy use / overall performance ratios for AI models will beat out the original “let’s just make it and release it regardless of the hardware necessary” kind of behavior that started the age of AI.
We’ll just have to see what other new AI processors are on deck for release soon…
