GameStop’s CEO has taken to X (twitter) to complain about DEI, among other things, in regard to attempting to sell off its French and Canadian operations.
The company announced the move in a brief news release on its website. While the statement did not provide any further explanation of the decision, its CEO appears to have taken issue with the “wokeness” of the two countries.
“Email M&A@gamestop.com if you’re interested in buying GameStop Canada or Micromania France,” Gamestop CEO Ryan Cohen posted to X Tuesday morning. “High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI included at no additional cost if you buy today!”
Yeah.
So France and Canada do both have high taxes, and there are certainly people who are socialist, liberals, and progressives in both countries… but there are socialists, liberals, and progressives in the United States. As well as high taxes. So I’m not sure what the point is beyond complaining.
You’ll be interested to know that corporate taxation in France, Canada, and the United States all hover around 25%. In all three countries this does not include labor taxes and various fees and taxes for the support of social programs but it’s interesting nonetheless that the general state + federal corporate taxes seem to all fall in the same range for all of them.
And wokeness? What the heck is the definition of wokeness besides things you personally do not like? Oh no that’s woke, that’s woke too, like milk? I don’t like milk. Woke. Way too woke bro. Believe others have rights? WOKE. Society is just too woke with all of its recognizing of diverse experiences and stuff.
DEI? Boohoo. If you’re complaining about the concepts of diversity, inclusion, and equity you are an imbecile. All three concepts are fundamental to the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence. All men are equal before the law, all have fundamental rights, all have a right to the pursuit of happiness.
Republicans used to claim to believe in stuff like that. Maybe they should go back to their previous beliefs.
Let’s simplify, in the interests of brevity, why DEI is in line with past Republican beliefs in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence…
Diversity is just ensuring everyone, diverse peoples, are included and respected. Respecting diverse experiences is simply part of respecting your fellow man. Recognizing that is an important part of affirming the Constitution. Equity ensures we all have a chance to pursue happiness. Affirming our rights once again. Inclusion ensures that everyone gets a seat at the table, affirming the rule of law and individual rights.
The concept is good.
DEI is ultimately good for Canada, it’s good for France, it’s good for the United States. It is not as annoying as some people have made it, it is not as stupid as some of these DEI programs have made it, and can also be a lot more basic than people have made it. It shouldn’t take a three month class but it should be encouraged as a general policy of respect for individual rights and your fellow man.
DEI is about everyone, not just black people or Asian people or Hispanic people. That should have been emphasized and overzealousness should have been addressed. They weren’t so here we are. We have CEOs endlessly complaining and destroying DEI programs. It didn’t have to be this way.
GameStop’s CEO has spoken rashly in his tweet. But from my understanding he often does. So we shouldn’t be surprised. And I’m guessing he’s going to have even more nonsense to say so prepare for that.
As a topper, GameStop’s employees are now under tremendous pressure from the C suite to achieve impossible standards that were raised in the last month. Again, rash behavior. But whatever. GameStop has failed its employees on a multitude of fronts and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that instead of supporting employees it has chosen to hurt them.
If you’re an investor in GameStop you might want to grow up and realize meme stocks are meaningless distractions and you will lose your money over time. GameStop is not a good company. It never will be until the C suite is replaced and employees are supported by corporate.
As always, this is a work of opinion. If you like GameStop’s stock, good for you. If you don’t like DEI, okay then. If you like GameStop’s c suite, that’s nice. It really doesn’t matter.
