… explains with real patience – taking things slowly for a novice like me – that every single person we know and love will soon be dead. They will be murdered by rebellious self-aware machines.

Just a note about the more extremist quote in the article…
I hope he wasn’t serious when he said that.
So DALL-E cannot even spell the word “oh” correctly one in seven times but AI is going to somehow murder us in our sleep.
ChatGPT 3.5 dumbly repeats themes across results but somehow generative AI will evolve to… what? Bring down the internet? Send us into the darkness by stopping people’s TikTok addiction?
AI doesn’t even have a body to jump to. There are no capable humanoid robots, industrial robots are often bolted to the floor, warehouse robots lack…. well a lot of things. There’s just nothing physical to murder us with. Our electronic world is what’s on the table and an AI would have to be advanced beyond anything we know to maliciously slip out and attack our digital world.
And nuclear weapons? Basically a Skynet scenario? It could happen, but just won’t happen. The safeguards we put on our current AIs says a lot about what rules, restrictions, firewalls, will be on AGI when it eventually is created.
Extremism gets us nowhere.
