If Elon Musk does buy Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast’s Magic the Gathering will have some trouble on its hands. It’s not like we know if Elon Musk was serious though. A lot of what he says is meant to be humorous but also serious at the same time. But let’s talk about why Magic the Gathering could lose players because of a Hasbro buyout…
First off, Elon Musk would most likely stop content creators from being aware of other cultures, religions, sexualities, stereotypes, etc… Having a “Libtard Phyrexian” is just not a good look for Magic the Gathering. You’d lose players just because Elon Musk doesn’t want Wizards of the Coast to be sensitive to the changing culture of the United States. He’d be at war against employees because of their “political correctness”.
Second, you’re going to lose Magic the Gathering players simply because players do not want to further enrich the richest man in the world with their cardboard buying habits. Why on earth would you continue to spend a fortune on cardboard when your money is just going into the pocket of a rich ass? Magic cards are expensive and there are other games you can play that aren’t so expensive… you save money while not supporting Elon. That’s a good situation.
Third, the shit Elon Musk says on X will also cause people to ditch Magic the Gathering. I don’t even want to go into how bizarre and shitty his X account is.
Fourth, Elon Musk himself. People do not like his behavior, do not like the fact that he is a threat to democracy, and really just do not like him as a person. Again you’d lose players just because Elon is Elon. That’s sad, but whatever. That’s where we are.
Fifth, Magic the Gathering would probably take a backseat in Elon Musk’s mind. He wants D&D for his AI gaming company. He’d probably pull a twitter and fire everyone in the Magic the Gathering group just because he doesn’t value their work. Pretty similar to what he plans to do with his DOGE idea.
I mean there are more reasons but that’s just what comes off the top of my head in this moment. Elon Musk buying Hasbro would probably end up being terrible for everything that isn’t D&D.
He definitely could use the Transformers IP to make some games though. That might be fun. So I guess everything wouldn’t all be terrible. And you do have to remember that while you hate Elon Musk his employees are not him.
They’re individuals with their own values, feelings, thoughts. So his AI gaming could end up making something you really really like and you shouldn’t exactly feel bad about that because Elon Musk is involved. A whole bunch of people were also involved. Not everything needs to be a political statement. Just something to think about in future.
So to review, Elon Musk sucks, Magic the Gathering is probably at risk, and we don’t know if he was serious or not. Fun, right?
