Magic the Gathering Play Booster Boxes Will Now Contain 30 Packs

Wizards of the Coast has decided its Magic the Gathering Play Booster Boxes will now contain only 30 packs per box! This change starts with the Aetherdrift set and supposedly play booster boxes will have their prices adjusted downwards to make up for the loss of those 6 packs. The lower price per box is supposedly preferred by consumers.

Which sounds more like Hasbro pretending to be doing consumers a favor rather than actually doing one.

I don’t really think Hasbro / Wizards of the Coast is doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. I think they’ve ignored the real world feedback of players that this screwed up drafting, where 36 packs per box was the perfect number for an 8 person draft, and just did their own thing.

And we’re only talking about 6 packs here… how much will that really reduce the price? It’s something like 16% fewer boosters, so are we going to see a 16% reduction in price? If we don’t it’ll be somewhat transparent that Hasbro did this for $$$

Like a lot of people my opinion is mixed on this move and I’m suspicious of the motivations. I guess we’ll see whether or not the price drops as much as the amount of boosters taken out!
