The Saigas of the steppe are in trouble!
The saiga, a kind of Asian antelope, has been decimated in recent weeks by what’s thought to be a virus.
The critically endangered saiga’s have lost more than a third of their total population. Some 120,000 individuals have died in an approximate two week span.
This erases a lot of the gains made in an extensive central Asian conservation program that has seen the saiga’s population rebound from a low of around 50,000.
