Was the Mike Tyson Jake Paul fight a scam? Yeah, kinda is the answer to that question. I mean it wasn’t literally a scam. But the fight did seem to be ALL about the money and hype.
The whole event was about the hype. Everything revolved around it and Jake Paul and Gang’s trash talking. Which made for a pretty unprofessional atmosphere. Which became even more unprofessional when Goyat humped his opponent in the ring. None of this would’ve ever been tolerated in MotoGP. Even in the NFL with all the showboating and egos it wouldn’t have been tolerated.
But neither boxer seemed to put in a good faith effort to box each other. Instead it was 8 rounds of sparring. Mike Tyson barely moved and threw very few punches… which destroyed everyone’s hopes for another classic Mike Tyson knockout. People had been wanting Tyson to kick Paul’s butt because let’s face it, Paul is an ass. Speaking of butts, why did I have to see Mike Tyson’s bare butt? Why was that a thing?
I’m no boxing expert but the whole thing smells wrong. Like I said it seemed like they were just sparring. I will mention that Mike Tyson was seriously ill earlier in the year and that undoubtedly effected his performance… but Paul seemingly holding back for all 8 rounds? What is that about?
Ultimately Tyson reportedly got $20,000,000 for his performance while Paul is rumored to get $40,000,000. So that’s a thing. $60,000,000 to two people for a fight that wasn’t exactly a fight. Speaking of money, I can’t imagine how gamblers must feel. Anybody who put money on Tyson must be enraged with his performance.
Oh and Netflix’s role in all of this? They did not seem to allocate enough computing resources to stream the match and an endless number of people couldn’t even watch or were stuck buffering every 30 seconds. It’s interesting how a number of articles on the match skate over this detail. It’s clear to people now that Netflix is not ready to stream live events. It’ll be pretty embarrassing of Netflix drops the ball again.
And the announcers? Wow. Again I’m no expert but even I found their commentary horrible. Like yeah we get it, you don’t like Tyson’s legs, thank you. I don’t want to skewer people so I’ll leave it at “horrible”.
Paul’s $1,000,000 outfit though? Are you kidding me? How f*cking offensive is that. $1,000,000 on clothes and he claims to be a philanthropist? $1,000,000 could’ve stocked quite a few food banks. You could’ve boxed in $20 Walmart stretchy shorts and it wouldn’t have changed the sparring y’all did.
How did Netflix think ANY of this was a good idea? How did Tyson and Paul think this was a good idea? What on earth did we all watch?
This whole event was a mess.
Again I will say this event was not a literal scam… but it certainly was bullshit.
