Why is everyone obsessed with deals and sales in the Pokemon world? Well that’s easy, because of how stupidly expensive this hobby is! People spend hundreds if not thousands on this hobby… mostly in the pursuit of chase cards.
The thing is you could view the “base unit” of Pokemon as a booster pack. That’s the lowest level of product you can buy at retail to enter the hobby. And retailers / The Pokemon Company want $5 per booster pack. So your minimum is $5 per unit… 10 units means you’ve already spent $50! And it’s really easy to buy 10 units / booster packs. It’s easy to buy 20 booster packs. It’s easy to buy 200 booster packs! It’s just easy to spend a ton of money very quickly.
So that leads people to be highly sensitive to sales and deals. If you can get booster packs for $3 each instead of $5 each you’re going to do whatever you can to get them. For a person averaging 200 packs per month, which is a very real amount, $3 instead of $5 means a savings of $400 per month. That’s not chump change. On an annual basis that’s $4800 in savings. And if they’re resellers that becomes part of their profit margin. Basically that $4800 is now just extra profit they get to keep when they sell for above MSRP.
This hobby is expensive! At least if you took up wood working and bought all those tools you wouldn’t have to constantly repurchase them like you do Pokemon… in Pokemon there’s always a new set to chase. In wood working you only have to buy your bandsaw the one time. So y’all should consider wood working if you have the room in an out building. If you live in an apartment, have you heard of models? lol
So everyone is on the hunt for deals all the time and there’s nothing to do about that. We’re all just sucked into this hobby for the rest of our lives and will continue paying the Pokemon Tax for eternity. That’s just facts.
